The Goodbye Year by Kaira Rouda plus Author Q&A

The Goodbye Year

As most of you have probably seen many publications, websites and blogs have been sharing their perfect summer beach reads!  I am so happy to have found The Goodbye Year by Kaira Rouda because its just what the pre-summer season ordered.  It was my first novel of Rouda’s and most certainly won’t be my last.  Now on a side note I am a “Bravoholic” and am obsessed with all things Real Housewives and Bravo– it’s a guilty pleasure 🙂  So for me this book was like entering into the world of Bravo.  It was drama filled, steamy, dishy and filled with gossiping characters- basically the perfect mix for a fabulous book that I didn’t want to put down.

I am not going into a descriptive summary as there are so many stories and characters, I do not want to give anything away.  What I can tell you is the story is based in California and during the senior year for a group of students and their parents.  The parents are getting ready for them to leave the nest and thinking beyond as to what life will be when they leave.  Each couple along with their kids alternate in telling their perspective within the story.  All the families are going through their own issues but have to be strong for their kids to complete this year.  From affairs to divorce to young love, The Goodbye Year is hard to put down.  The characters are all so different but yet their stories pull together and form this seamless and emotional plot, which Kaira tells so well.  I promise you it is the perfect summer read as well as a great read for all those parents fearing the “empty nest”.  Read on below as I was lucky enough to ask Kaira a few questions about the book as well as about herself.  She gave a fantastic interview!

Bliss Chat with Kaira Rouda

1. Did the senior years of your children inspire The Goodbye year?  Did you feel the empty nest syndrome?

Yes, my youngest just finished his freshman year in college. I wrote this during his high school senior year . . . it is definitely inspired by my real life. And, I’m still adjusting to my empty nest. I think it takes time, at least for me it does!

2. There are so many characters and stories within the story.  How do you keep track when you are writing?  Do you have all of them in mind at first and then connect them?

I knew from the start of this story that it would be important to tell it from the voice of the high school seniors, and the parents. I started with families and the story unfolded from there!

3. Living in Laguna Beach do you come across juicy secrets and scandals like the ones in the book 🙂  If so were any of them inspiration in the book?

Laguna Beach actually is a mellow, artistic and beautiful place to live. Juicy secrets are everywhere — usually behind the closed doors of people whose lives you think are perfect.

4. What would be one piece of advice to parents who are going through senior year with their kids?

Gosh, enjoy every moment. Give the gift of your presence. Remember it’s so stressful, especially first semester with college applications and the rest. The Goodbye Year speeds by, and the kids are graduating before you know it.

5.  As a writer, where is your favorite place to write?

My office, with my dogs around me.

6. Name 3 blissful things that you can’t live without?

my family, coffee, yoga – oh and the beach (sorry that’s four)

7. What is the first thing you do when you complete a book?

Smile. It’s really a great feeling.

8. What was the last book that you read?

I’m just finishing Me Before You by Jojo Moyes. Before that, Come Away with Me by Karma Brown. Great books.

9. While on tour what is a must-have beauty product in your make-up bag?

A hair tie. I’m constantly putting my hair in a pony tail, and then taking it down again. It’s a nervous tic, I think!

10. Are you looking forward to any books that are coming out in 2016?

I’m a big reader and the TBR stack next to my bed is eight books deep. There are so many great books out now and coming our way this summer.

Cover Image - A Dangerous AgeAuthor Photo - Kelly Killoren credit to Matt Albiani

via Goodreads:

“Couture royalty meets downtown grit and heady artists mingle with freewheeling socialites in A Dangerous Age, a sophisticated, indulgent, and delicious novel of contemporary New York City that women of all ages will devour.

It’s the dog days of a sweltering Manhattan summer, and four sophisticated best friends who once took New York by storm are secretly falling apart at the seams. Lucy’s marriage to a renowned artist is slowly crumbling, with an explosive secret that threatens them both. Sarah, in the middle of auditioning for an auspicious new television show, realizes that her socialite standing is in jeopardy after countless disastrous events. Billy—a queen in the kitchen—has finally left her former life behind to become a highbrow cuisine artist. And Lotta, a knockout downtown art dealer, spends her free time guzzling cocktails in both the grittiest and most expensive clubs around town—but now, she’s taken it a little too far.

In this addicting and refreshing comedy of manners reminiscent of Edith Wharton, Lucy, Sarah, Billy, and Lotta go to all ends to hide their troubles in a city that worships only the young, twentysomething it-girl. But in the end, there’s no denying that these women have all entered a very dangerous age…and who knows how they’ll emerge on the other side.”

After Perfect by Christina McDowell

CHRISTINA MCDOWELL

CHRISTINA MCDOWELL

via Goodreads:

“In the tradition of New York Times bestsellers What Remains by Carole Radziwill and Oh the Glory of It All by Sean Wilsey, Christina McDowell’s unflinching memoir is a brutally honest, cautionary tale about one family’s destruction in the wake of the Wall Street implosion.

Christina McDowell was born Christina Prousalis. She had to change her name to be legally extricated from the trail of chaos her father, Tom Prousalis, left in the wake of his arrest and subsequent imprisonment as one of the guilty players sucked into the collateral fallout of Jordan Belfort (the Wolf of Wall Street). Christina worshipped her father and the seemingly perfect life they lived…a life she finds out was built on lies. Christina’s family, as is typically the case, had no idea what was going on. Nineteen-year-old Christina drove her father to jail while her mother dissolved in denial.

Since then, Christina’s life has been decimated. As her family floundered in rehab, depression, homelessness, and loss, Christina succumbed to the grip of alcohol, drugs, and promiscuity before finding catharsis in the most unlikely of places. From the bucolic affluence of suburban Washington, DC, to the A-list clubs and seedy underbelly of Los Angeles, this provocative memoir unflinchingly describes the harsh realities of a fall from grace. Full of nineties nostalgia and access to the inner circles of the Washingtonian societal elite, Christina McDowell’s beautiful memoir is a Blue Jasmine story from a daughter’s perspective.”

Good Mourning by Elizabeth Meyer

9781476783611Author photo credit to Calvin Aurand

via Goodreads:

“In this funny, insightful memoir, a young socialite risks social suicide when she takes a job at a legendary funeral chapel on New York Citys Upper East Side.Good Mourning offers a behind-the-scenes look at one of the most famous funeral homes in the country where not even big money can protect you from the universal experience of grieving.
It’s Gossip Girl meets Six Feet Under, told from the unique perspective of a fashionista turned funeral planner.

Elizabeth Meyer stumbled upon a career in the midst of planning her own father’s funeral, which she turned into an upbeat party with Rolling Stones music, thousands of dollars worth of her mother’s favorite flowers, and a personalized eulogy. Starting out as a receptionist, Meyer quickly found she had a knack for helping people cope with their grief, as well as creating fitting send-offs for some of the city’s most high-powered residents.
Meyer has seen it all: two women who found out their deceased husband (yes, singular) was living a double life, a famous corpse with a missing brain, and funerals that cost more than most weddings. By turns illuminating, emotional, and darkly humorous, Good Mourning is a lesson in how the human heart grieves and grows, whether you’re wearing this season’s couture or drug-store flip-flops.”

Turning the Tables: From Housewife to Inmate and Back Again by Teresa Giudice

turning-the-tables-9781501135118_hr

via Goodreads:

“The star of The Real Housewives of New Jersey and three-time New York Times bestselling author offers a behind-the-scenes look at life in prison, her marriage, her rise to fame, the importance of her family, and the reality TV franchise that made her a household name in her explosive and ultimately uplifting first-ever memoir.

“People think they know everything about me…but they don’t. Not even close.”

Teresa Giudice, star of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, has seen it all, but nothing—not even Real Housewives scandals—could compare to the media firestorm that ensued after she was convicted on federal fraud charges.

The infamous, fun-loving Jersey mom of four was sentenced to fifteen months in the same prison where Piper Kerman—the real-life inspiration behind Orange Is the New Black—did her time. Her tiny prison cubicle in Connecticut felt so far removed from the glamorous world portrayed on The Real Housewives of New Jersey. What was a skinny Italian to do? Keep a diary, of course…

In her very first tell-all memoir, Teresa comes clean on all things Giudice: growing up as an Italian-American, meeting the love of her life and starting a family, dealing with chaos and catfights on national television, and eventually, coming to terms with the reality of life in prison. Featuring never-before-seen scans of her prison diary, Turning the Tables captures some of the most memorable moments of her prison stay, including the cringe-inducing fights she witnessed, the awkward conundrum of being trapped when a fellow inmate had a…guest…over, and the strength she found while confined between four concrete walls.

Even at her lowest of lows, Teresa was able to live la bella vita by staying positive and realizing her purpose. Friends, foes, and fans have speculated about Teresa’s prison experience, but nothing will prepare you for the revelations she makes in this entertaining and heartwarming memoir.

“The world will see a new Teresa. A different Teresa. Well, actually, the Teresa I always was.””

The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo by Amy Schumer

via Goodreads:

“From award-winning comedian, writer, producer, and actress Amy Schumer comes The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, a thoughtful, honest, and hysterical collection of (very) personal essays.

Never one to shy away from the uproarious, challenging, and remarkable moments that make up life, this exceptionally candid book will have readers wincing with recognition, nodding their head in solidarity, and laughing out loud.

Written with Amy’s signature candor, she reflects on her often raucous childhood antics, her hard won and incomparable rise to comedic stardom, and the courage it takes to approach the world with astounding honesty every single day.

Surely the most anticipated collection of the year, Amy shines bright as a friend, daughter, and sister, unforgettable comedian, and most notably, a masterful (and always entertaining) storyteller.”

American Babe: A White Girl Problems Book by Babe Walker

american-babe-9781501124846_hr.jpg

via Goodreads:

“Author of the New York Times bestseller White Girl Problems and Psychos, Babe Walker, faces her most daunting challenge yet—suburbia—in the third caustically witty White Girl Problems book.

Babe Walker thought she had done it all. After all, she’s survived the highly exclusive social hierarchies of Bel Air, traipsed around Europe in true white-girl fashion, and left her mark on several of the best rehab facilities in the United States. But now Babe is about to enter a terrifying new world: Middle America.

After a freak accident that was definitely not Babe’s fault, her estranged mother offers her the perfect escape from LA: an invite to her grandfather’s eightieth birthday party in Maryland, of all places. Babe’s journey throws her headlong into elementary school classrooms full of small, unfashionable people and pizza buffet restaurants that will haunt her nightmares and eventually back to Los Angeles, thank goodness. Tossed together with her cousins—basic preteen Cara and mature and preternaturally stylish Knox—Babe learns that connecting with someone on an intimate, familial level might be the most rewarding experience there is…

Besides being thin, of course.

Hysterical, unapologetic, and as unfiltered as ever, Babe Walker proves again to be the “urban socialite you love to hate” (Time), and she can only hope the population is ready for American Babe.”

Fabulous Book and Beauty Giveaway with The Knockoff by Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza

knockoff

In celebration of one of my MOST favorite 2015 releases, The Knockoff by Lucy Sykes and Jo Piazza, I am giving away a  brand new copy of the book and the new Lengthening Mascara by Beautycounter.  Both released this past week!  Almost one year ago I posted my love for the book and its hard cover release.  I am reposting that post for you to see how much I adored Imogen and the world of The Knockoff.  Basically the perfect beach read if there ever was one.  I also am so excited about this new, amazing mascara from Beautycounter that was years in the making!  It truly works and provides lush, long lashes.  Both up for grabs for all my blissful readers.  To see how to enter please head over to my Facebook page here and you can find all the rules!

The story centers around Imogen who is the head of Glossy magazine, a fabulous high fashion magazine in New york City.  Imogen is returning back to work after leaving on medical leave due to cancer.  Upon her return her former assistant Eve is at the forefront, ready to take Glossy into the digital and tech age.  Imogen, open to the possibility and change for the magazine, is taken aback by Eve and the woman she has become.  Eve who was her perky, fun assistant is now a snarky, condescending, “B-School” grad who is heading up the digital change for the magazine.  A seasoned fashion and magazine professional, Imogen is thrown into the world of Tweets and Facebook posts, something she doesn’t really know much about.  This is exactly the achilles heel Eve is looking for.  Imogen looks like the novice as Eve takes the lead and turns Glossy into a fashion and magazine nightmare.  Luckily for Imogen, her years of the fashion world come to her rescue when she needs them most.

Sykes and Piazza take you into a world of tech and fashion- two things that are always on the rise.  I loved Imogen from the start and was #teamImogen the whole way through.  I love books that have a heroine at the center who you are cheering for at every word.  I also loved the theme of career and family and creating balance, something most woman deal with.  It is not easy but at the end of the day you do what is best for you and your family and right there you are successful.  I am hoping either for a sequel to this book or promise that Sykes and Piazza will team up again.  They are the perfect duo to kick off beach season and my “Blissful Beach Bag” picks!  Happy BEACH reading!

You Made Me a Mother by Laurenne Sala

mother_cover

Mother’s Day is almost here and I found the perfect book for new mom’s, old mom’s and any mom alike!  The absolutely beautiful and touching You Made Me a Mother by Laurenne Sala.  This book was first a poem written by Sala and then made into a video for Boba, the baby carrier company, which went viral and touched so many women’s hearts.  Sala went with the popularity of the video and teamed up with the whimsical and charming illustrator Robin Preiss Glasser– the master artist of the Fancy Nancy series.  The two created a book that is so warm and magical you can’t finish without misty eyes, in the best way.

authorpic_SALA

I am the mom of a two year old daughter, Chloe and one boy on the way.  The moments of joy trump the moments of questionable sanity, but boy its hard.  Its the hardest job I will ever have but the absolute best title I can call myself.  This book really depicts the realities of motherhood and reminds us with out all the crying, sleepless nights, gray hairs and terrible two’s we wouldn’t be who we are- Mothers.  These little beings made us that way.  This book is the perfect Mother’s Day gift, Baby Shower gift, book for any mother figure in your life, it will be loved by any one receiving it- guaranteed.  I was lucky enough to ask Laurenne some questions about the book and her writing process as well as some fun facts about her!  See below and try not to watch this video and not cry 🙂

  1. Growing up what was the relationship like with you and your mom?

My mom was a single mom, so we were bestiestwo girls having fun in the Chicago suburbs. I really looked up to her when I was younger and thought she knew everything. She taught me how to work a toolbox and get things done without having to call on a man. We had fun, sang at the tops of our lungs in the car, and danced on Sundays to clean house. Then I became a teenager and hated her, but before that, everything was great!

  1. Moms are such inspiring figures in our lives.Who are some inspiring women in your life aside from your mom?

I learned to write within the ad industry, and there arent too many women in it! I havent had many female professional mentors until very recently when Robin Preiss Glasser, the illustrator of my book and the Fancy Nancy series, took me under her wing. Then, Lissa Price and Michelle Markel, two brilliant authors, came in to help me with this new career, and it has been a delight to be able to call on someone who knows the game and knows what I am going through right now.

I also look up to people who arent afraid to talk about their truths, like Brené Brown and Jill Soloway. Mainly, I am inspired by each one of my friends for their different lovely attributes. Its either their generous hearts or their zen attitudes or their assertiveness. My friends are all so great, and I am lucky to know them.

3.I know this was originally a poem, a beautiful one at that.  Moms were so in love with this message.  When you saw the responses to the video from social media how did that make you feel?

I was so absolutely shocked! I wrote the poem, and I didnt even know the video had been finished. Suddenly, I get a Huffington Post article in my inbox, and I got the chills.

I felt validated because I had been writing another book with the goal to make people feel, and it had just been rejected by a few agents. So, to know that I could make people feel made ME feel (happy tears and relief). And to know that I had really achieved the goal of capturing motherhood felt wonderful because Ive felt for a while now that Im ready to be a mom. Phew! It also meant I could hear the insights from other wonderful people (like my mom and cousins and friends) and turn them into something else, so that also felt greatlike maybe I can be a ghostwriter or write historical fiction. Ideas just opened up to me, and my mindset changed from being so hard on myself. I stopped telling myself I should probably quit writing and go wait tables.

4.I know you are a speaker as well.  What type of talks do you give and what is your favorite part about speaking on such a great platform?

I talk about vulnerability and about how admitting who you really are can help open you up to things in life! I am so passionate about this topic that I started a storytelling show, Taboo Tales. I help people write out their stories and get them to release them on stage in front of a live audience. After seeing how being vulnerable has helped countless people, I started speaking about it at colleges. So far its been great, and Ive learned that most everyone is holding something in no matter how old they are and how taboo it is. This is a piece that explains how I got to that point. Its deep, so be warned.

  1.  As a writer, where is your favorite place to write?

I like to write in coffee shops with lots of plugs and nobody to kick me out if I stay too long.

  1. Name 3 blissful things that you can’t live without?

cuddling. real talk. reading books in the sun on the beach (with a friend and mimosas).

  1. What is the first thing you do when you complete a book?

When I complete reading a book, I love to look up reviews and see if others agree with me or not. When I complete writing a book, I either want to share it with someone or I dont. If I dont, its a bad sign.

  1. What was the last book that you read?

I read Laurie Halse Andersons Chainsand then Forgeimmediately after. I didnt realize it was a series, and I ran out to get the next one the very day I finished the first.

  1. While on tour what is a must-have beauty product in your make-up bag?                I’m looking for suggestions on how to be more of a make-up kind of girl. I bring some eye cream. Some Make Up Forever foundation. Some other creams… ? Help!

  1. Are you looking forward to any books that are coming out in 2016?

YES! Remember that trilogy I mentioned in #8? The third book has been promised for months, and its been stalled. I CANNOT WAIT! It must come out in October, or I will be forever lost.

The Year We Turned Forty by Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke

the-year-we-turned-forty-9781476763446_hr

So I do not need to declare my love for bestie authors Liz Fenton and Lisa Steinke.  I mean if you follow them on Instagram or Facebook you will see that they are the gals you would call on a Friday night for guaranteed fun, all the while knowing they write absolutely addictive and fabulous books.  The Year We Turned Forty was just this and more.  Each year I get super excited for their books and then have complete sadness when they are over as I know I have to wait!  Not only are their books a literary triple threat they are as well- fierce, fun and fabulous.

The Year We Turned Forty centers around three best friends- Jessie, Claire and Gabriela.  They are all facing life challenges but decide to take a girls getaway to Vegas to celebrate all turning 50.  While there, they are all trying to get away from the everyday stressors of their lives when they meet Blair Wainwright, an illusionist who tells them if they all agree then he can bring them back 10 years, to the year they turned forty.  They will be able to get a second chance on some of the decisions and mistakes they made way back then.  They all decide they are in and overnight they are transported back to 2005.  Each dealing with their own decisions and issues they have to decide if they want to change the past or continue to live in the future with possible regrets.

Jessie is dealing with the fact that she cheated on her husband and got pregnant with someone else’s baby.  She is unsure if she should keep the identity of the father to herself or share with her husband the baby’s father.  Gabriela is dealing with infertility and the effect that is having on her successful career and marriage.  Will she be able to make it through or will the inability to bear a child cause demise in her life?  Finally, Claire is reliving the cancer diagnosis of her mother and the parental issues of dealing with a teenage daughter.  Feeling like she can’t manage she tries to look for the silver lining in her life but will she be able to handle the heartache?

13168_410147428_hr

Finishing this booked just reaffirmed my love for Liz and Lisa.  They are master storytellers about friendship and womanhood.  Their books are relatable and their characters are people we all know or want to know, making it impossible to put them down.  I absolutely loved the premise of this story as it would be the perfect book club topic- What if you could re-write history?  We all think of the what if’s in life but if you were really given the chance what would you do?  The thought that Liz and Lisa give to each women and their story is so evident in this book which makes their skill for character development so obvious.  This is an absolute must read and the perfect choice to get us into summer beach read season!  Until the next Liz and Lisa book…enjoy 🙂

Prince-William

In honor of Will and Kate’s 5th wedding anniversary today, I have decided to pay homage to a few fabulous books about the duo.  I am royally obsessed and have been since I purchased a heart donut at Dunkin’ Donuts on the day of their wedding.  Since their nuptials I have been collecting different memorabilia as well as books and magazines.  One day I hope to visit London but for now I can live vicariously through the amazing photos and travels that the duke and duchess take.  See below for some of my “royal favorites”!

  1. Game of Crowns Elizabeth, Camilla, Kate, and the Throne by Christopher Andersen is the most recent release and addition to my royal favorites.  Andersen, a seasoned writer with multiple New York Times bestsellers takes on the story of  the relationship between Elizabeth, Camilla and Kate.

game-of-crowns-9781476743950_hr

From Simon and Schuster:

“The #1 New York Times bestselling author of William and Kate and The Day Diana Died takes a compulsively readable look into the relationships and rivalries of Queen Elizabeth, Camilla Parker Bowles, and Kate Middleton.

One has been famous longer than anyone on the planet—a wily stateswoman and an enduring symbol of a fading institution. One is the great-granddaughter of a king’s mistress and a celebrated homewrecker who survived a firestorm of scorn to marry her lover and replace her arch rival, a beloved twentieth-century figure. One is a beautiful commoner, the university-educated daughter of a self-made entrepreneur, a fashion idol, and wife and mother to two future kings.

Master biographer Christopher Andersen takes readers behind palace walls to examine the surprising similarities and stark differences among three remarkable women—Queen Elizabeth; Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall; and Princess Kate. Andersen reveals what transpires within the royal family away from the public’s prying eyes; how the women actually feel about each other; how they differ as lovers, wives, and mothers; and how they are reshaping the landscape of the monarchy in this addictive read that will shock even those who are spellbound by the royal palace.”

kate-s-style-3

From Barrons Educational Books:

“The moment Kate Middleton stepped in front of the camera with her then fiancé Prince William to announce their engagement, a style icon was born. The electric blue Issa dress she wore on that day sold out in just 24 hours and sparked an international trend in “little blue dresses.” Classic and ladylike, yet fresh and youthful, the Duchess of Cambridge’s style has been like a breath of fresh air in a world that seemed to have forgotten the undeniable appeal of dressing like a lady.

Now, author and lifestyle writer Caroline Jones captures that elusive style and tells us just how to create it in our own wardrobes. In Kate’s Style, Jones offers a range of tools for achieving the Duchess’s celebrated look. Readers will find—

  • A visual timeline of Kate’s outfits—from her days at university to recent royal tours and red carpet appearances
  • A directory of her favorite retailers and designers
  • A fabulous collection of full page photos showcasing Kate’s most iconic outfits, complete with pointers on how to recreate the look.

Kate’s Style, is the essential guide for Kate addicts and fashion lovers alike.”

From Hachette Book Group:

“Now in paperback, the beloved novel and New York Times Summer Reading List pick hailed as “hysterical” by Entertainment Weekly‘s Must List, and “so fun and dishy” by People.

American Bex Porter was never one for fairy tales. Her twin sister Lacey was always the romantic, the one who daydreamed of being a princess, but it’s adventure-seeking Bex who goes to Oxford and meets dreamy Nick across the hall-and Bex who finds herself accidentally in love with the heir to the British throne. Nick is wonderful, but he comes with unimaginable baggage: a complicated family, hysterical tabloids tracking his every move, and a public that expected its future king to marry a Brit. On the eve of the most talked-about wedding of the century, Bex looks back on how much she’s had to give up for true love… and exactly whose heart she may yet have to break.”

Will You Won’t You Want Me? by Nora Zelevansky

9781250001276

Are you looking for a fun, fabulous and fearless female read?  Then grab Will You Won’t You Want Me? by Nora Zelevansky.  It’s the perfect pick for anyone at a crossroads in their lives who are questioning what are they doing or where should they be going?  Perfect for new graduates or adults, we have all been there, looking for a little inspiration, Majorie Plum is the girl we all need in our lives. Zelevansky writes a funny, touching and romantic read that was impossible not to get sucked into.

Marjorie Plum was the popular girl in high-school.  Beautiful and sought after with all the guys she was the “it girl”.  Fast forward, high school is over and the real world has begun.  She is at a good job, living in the city with her best friend Vera and living the good life until  she loses her job, her best friend ditches her and the apartment for her boyfriend and Marjorie is forced to reevaluate her life.  With no money and no direction of where to go she heads back to her parents to get their help and advice.  Her Mom has a lead for a roommate looking for another roommate and so begins the relationship between Marjorie aka Madge and Fred, a little pip squeak of a girl who adds the perfect balance to Madge’s life.  In the meantime Madge is also dealing with Mac, her old interest from high school who is still in love with her but she isn’t sure she is love with him.  With Fred’s help and spirit, Madge starts to pick up the pieces to her life and move forward.  For one Madge fills in for Fred in a tutoring job with little Belinda, “Belly”, who is trying to survive in the horrible trenches of middle school.  Madge is the perfect person to help her come out of her shell and the two form an instant bond.  Madge also meets Gus, who owns a film business with Fred’s brother.  They decide to hire Madge temporarily to fill in for some administrative work.  With all the piece starting to fall into place Madge is feeling accomplished and successful.  But will it all work out in it the end?  Is Mac the one true love for her or is there someone right in front of her who is truly her destiny?  Madge’s journey may not be an easy one but she learns many lessons along the way and discovers she is stronger and smarter than she thinks she is.

Nora_Zelevansky

I loved this book and think it’s the perfect read for anyone who needs a little direction in their life.  Madge is in all of us.  We have all been there before where we are questioning everything and feel as though nothing is going our way.  She is the underdog who reminds us all that everything works out in the end and to be thankful for the people we meet and the experiences we have along the way.  Zelevansky has a creative way of telling the story which made it that much more charming.  I am excited to see what Nora has in store as this book is getting a lot of well deserved praise.  Graduations are coming up and there is no doubt that this it the perfect gift!

Opportunity Knocks by Alison Sweeney + Doctor Rogers RESTORE GIVEAWAY

OpportunityKnocks PB

There is nothing I love more than beauty and books ~ hence the blog name.  Being a freelance make-up artist myself and working in the beauty industry for over 10 years, I was sucked into Opportunity Knocks by Alison Sweeney.  A story based around a young woman who is a make-up artist, trying to find her way in this cutthroat world of all things beauty and cosmetics.  I had yet to read any of Sweeney’s novels but was delighted in the fact that it was a easy, light , entertaining read.  If you are a lover of beauty or always rooting for the underdog than you will love Opportunity Knocks!

Alex is a twenty something makeup artist who is trying to find her way.  Determined not to become part of her family’s business she knows make-up is her passion and wants to pursue this dream, despite her parents hesitation.  Her boyfriend Sean, who is in her family’s business, questions her career path as well.  When her best friend Emma has her tag along to her job, working for the devilish Hillary P., Alex gets the chance of a life time.  She is asked to fill in last minute as her make-up artist.  From what Alex can see Hillary P. is no angel and her demands and requests are insane, but it’s a job.  Hillary is impressed with Alex and decides to bring her on full-time, causing her to relocate to NYC and sign a non-disclosure agreement.  Basically if Alex talks about anything related to Hillary then she is busted.  When Alex is befriend by a young man at a bar, Nick, she lets loose about life and her new move.  She starts to feel like she is taking friends.  Meanwhile she also meets Billy Fox, a southern actor, who is not only gorgeous but sweet as well.  They start to form a relationship and it couldn’t come at a better time as things are rocky with Sean and Alex finds herself side swiped by Hillary P.  Alex is being sued for supposed breach of her non-disclosure.  Alex has no idea how this happened.  She never talked about Hillary to anyone..or did she?  As she only has a certain amount of time to fix this problem she will need all the help she can get!  Will she be able to get out of this mess with the help of a Hollywood heartthrob or will she become washed up and broke?

Alison Sweeney-Robert Trachtenberg_final

Opportunity Knocks was a fun, exciting read with lots of twists and of course beauty!  I was so impressed with the beauty knowledge and facts as they were spot on!  You can tell Alison clearly has had her fair share of Hollywood life as it was juicy and full of starlit moments.  I wonder if she has encountered anyone like Hillary P. in her career?  We all can wonder 🙂  Sweeney is a perfect actress turned author as she created a story that flowed and kept me hooked.  This is definitely one for the pool side or maybe a cocktail companion?  Definitely grab a copy and make sure you are perfectly coiffed as you never know who is watching.

INTRODUCING DOCTOR ROGERS RESTORETM HEALING BALM

SEATTLE, WA – February, 2016 – Introducing Doctor Rogers RESTORETM, a rich, restorative healing balm, that deeply hydrates, replenishes and protects your skin.

After continually hearing her patients’ frustration with petroleum-based skin care ointments, Dr. Heather D. Rogers was inspired to create a safe, petroleum and allergen-free healing balm derived from 100 percent plant-based ingredients.

“I knew I could do better for my patients,” noted Dr. Rogers, founder of RESTORETM and the recently opened state-of-the-art Modern Dermatology clinic in Seattle. “I wanted to create a better, safer and environmentally friendly skin protectant for my patients, family, and friends because I knew it was possible.”

Doctor Rogers RESTORETM Healing Balm is designed to help restore skin to its natural state by creating a moisturizing barrier that protects and calms irritated or damaged skin. RESTORETM encourages rapid healing of the skin while being free of petroleum, preservatives, parabens and

fragrances making it safe to use on any dry, damaged, sensitive, postoperative or injured skin.

At Dr. Rogers Skin Solutions LLC, only the purest plant-based ingredients are used to make RESTORETM, proven to support the skin’s natural healing process. Glycerin, from palm oil, hydrates and promotes healing to restore the skin back to health while Castorlatum, derived from castor beans, reduces irritation and protects raw or sensitive skin.

“My patients need a safe, skin care product not only for post-procedure repair but also for everyday bumps and scrapes,” added Dr. Rogers. “People are mindful of what they are putting on their skin and it is important we treat our skin with the utmost care. I rigorously tested RESTORETM and received the FDA indication for RESTORETM as an over-the-counter medication for skin protection.”

Available today at http://www.doctorrogers.com and Amazon.com in a 0.5 ounce jar for $30 and an 8 ounce jar for $80. Also available at Modern Dermatology and select authorized medical practices.

Doctor Rogers RESTORETM Healing Balm is a staple in her daily skin care routine. Dr. Rogers says that it is her “instant skin fix” and as an active and busy mom, she always has a jar at home, at work, in her handbag and car. She uses it daily for cuts, scrapes, dry or damaged skin and to moisturize lips and nails. In addition, she uses it as a little cosmetic pick-me-up to set eyebrows, keep concealer from cracking, and provide a youthful dewy glow to her cheeks. RESTORETM is for women, men, and children and is an all season, all body, and all ages product.

When not reminding her patients to protect their skin, Dr. Rogers can be found enjoying life with her husband and their two children.

Island in the Sea by Anita Hughes

9781250080424

So I just came back from a trip to Majorca!  Not really, but that is how Island in the Sea by Anita Hughes made me feel!  I felt transported to this beautiful island without having to leave the comfort of my couch!  Not shocking ,as Hughes always manages to write with such description there is no other option but to take yourself there.  I loved this story as I usually do with Hughes’ novels.  It was part love story added with some sun and some fabulous fashion, what more could a girl want!  Back your bathing suit and pour some champagne as Island in the Sea is the perfect getaway.

Judith is a record executive sent to the island of Majorca off the coast of Spain, by her boss Gideon, to make sure hit songwriter Lionel completes his contract.  Lionel, years older than Judith, is at a low point of his career, heartbroken and thinking he doesn’t have any more songs in him.  Judith is frustrated because she knows her job is in jeopardy if she does not return to LA with a new album.  Since Lionel is going to the beat of his own drum, Judith has no option but to explore all that Majorca has to offer.  Here she meets Gabriella, a young, beautiful girl who works at her parents restaurant.  While getting to know Gabriella, Judith discovers she has a voice of an angel and would be the next Beyonce.  But Gabriella is not interested in that life as she wants to settle down and open her own restaurant with her boyfriend.  Gabriella’s grandmother, who also befriends Judith, believes she should follow her singing career as she doesn’t want her to have regrets.  As Judith starts to get comfortable with Lionel and life on the island she meets Henry, a professional tennis player who she could potentially be falling in love with.  As her time starts to come to an end she’s at a crossroads; Will Lionel complete his contract?  IS Henry the one? Will Gabriella change her mind and become the next big thing? And lastly is true love something Judith will find in the magical Majorca?

Anita Hughes always ceases to suck me into her novels and that is the best possible thing 🙂 Her settings are so real and her character stories are so addicting.  You become part of the story as the reader. and really what more can you ask for as a bookworm.  This book is the perfect appetizer for the upcoming beach read season.  Stay tuned as Hughes has another novel coming out soon, Santorini Sunsets which is sure to be just as delectable.  I was so excited to be able to ask Hughes a few questions about her writing as well as some fun facts about Anita herself.  See below!

Bliss Chat with Anita Hughes

1.  I literally felt like I just took a trip to Majorca!  You always have a way of transporting the reader to your exotic destinations.   What is your process/method into getting so in detail with your locations?  Have you traveled to any of them?
One of my favorite things about writing is describing the locations because I also feel like I’m right there! I have traveled to most of them but I refresh my memory by immersing myself on the internet – I study images and look up hotels and restaurants. I even spend a lot of time on menus!
2.  The book centered around the music business.  Who are your favorite artists and did you listen to lots of different songs while writing this novel to inspire you?

I’m a fan of Coldplay and Muse and I’m enjoying Twenty One Pilots. I walk for forty-five minutes every day – to the beach – and I always listen to Spotify. The song that inspired me to write ISLAND IN THE SEA is The Girl From Ipanema. It is an old Bossa Nova song and it is the second most recorded song in pop music history. I love the Frank Sinatra version – it makes me feel summery.

3.  I loved the relationship between Judith and Gabriella.  Were you secretly routing for Gabriella to pursue her music career or did you know she would follow her heart for love?

I knew Gabriella would follow her heart. She is so happy in Majorca, and love and family are the most important things to her.
4. I know you live in CA.  Have you ever encountered people like Lionel and Gideon in your career?

I haven’t encountered them specifically, but I imagine they are lurking around Hollywood!
5.  As a writer, where is your favorite place to write?

My favorite place (and the only place I write) is on the love seat in my bedroom. It looks out on our garden and on the golf course. It is very peaceful and our garden is often full of bunnies!
6. Name 3 blissful things that you can’t live without?

The beach, frozen yogurt, books.
7. What is the first thing you do when you complete a book?

I usually walk to the beach, it is a great way to relax and unwind.
8. What was the last book that you read?

The Nest, by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney. It was terrific.
9. While on tour what is a must-have beauty product in your make-up bag?

Lipgloss! My lips always get dry from talking.
10. Are you looking forward to any books that are coming out in 2016?

There are so many great books coming out this year! I am looking forward to Lauren Weisberger’s new novel, THE SINGLES GAME and Emily Giffin’s FIRST COMES LOVE.

Lies and Other Acts of Love by Kristy Woodson Harvey ~ Author Q&A

Kristy Woodson Harvey_LIES AND OTHER ACTS OF LOVE cover art

Happy Friday blissful readers!  I had a great weekend submerged into the ever so delicious Lies and Other Acts of Love by Kristy Woodson Harvey.  If you have yet to read about this novel do yourself a favor and figure out a way to get this book ASAP!  It’s the quintessential southern love story mixed with family drama and southern charm.  Harvey is a southern girl herself and this shines throughout her words and characters.  The setting is picturesque and the people are just genuinely good people.  Grab yourself a glass of sweet tea and enjoy the sun as this book is sure to bring warmth to your heart and a smile to your face.

Annabelle is newly married to Ben, a gorgeous musician who is head over heels in love with her.  Ben was a rushed marriage as everyone thought Annabelle would take the safe route and marry Holden, the picture perfect southern gentlemen.  Annabelle couldn’t hide her true feelings for Ben and called off her engagement to Holden.  Her family wasn’t pleased with this decision but has accepted the happiness that Ben brings her.  Annabelle comes from a long lineage of women- aside from her Mom, she has strong 4 aunts and grandmother Lovey, who is the captain of this fierce female ship.  Lovey is Annabelle’s go to for advice and life navigating as Lovey and her husband D-Daddy are the portrait for a good, strong marriage.  D-Daddy’s health is failing and Lovey relies on Annabelle to take her to the place that they love, Martha’s Vineyard.  Upon returning back home Annabelle finds Ben in a compromising way causing concern for her marriage all the while Lovey and D-Daddy’s health is at risk.  Deciding to throw herself into her work, helping at her local church, she starts to take comfort in her pastor, Rob.  He is always there with good advice and support but will Annabelle see through that and maybe see something more?  As she starts to pick up the pieces in her life she reveals more secrets that change her life.  Told from alternating perspectives of Annabelle and Lovey, Lies and Other Acts of love will question how much we truly hide from our family in the name of love.

This book was fabulous, plain and simple.  Kristy created a story that is deep and soulful and her southern voice shines through.  I loved the way her characters were so complex yet kept the story filled with light and hope.  This being Harvey’s second novel is a shock as she clearly is an author here to stay and will have so much more to offer.  I was lucky enough to ask her a few questions about the book and a few about her as well! See below 🙂

Bliss Chat with Kristy Woodson Harvey

Both of your books- Dear Carolina and Lies and Others Acts of Love have involved strong women characters.  Which strong women inspire you in your life? Certainly my family. My mom and aunts and grandmother, like the women in the book, are all very strong and inspirational, and I look up to them so much!

I know you are from the South, which is so beautifully depicted in this book, almost a character in itself.  I loved that you wrote about the Vineyard.  I am a Massachusetts girl 🙂  What made you write about the Vineyard and what is your experience there? It is a place I have visited many, many times, and, honestly, I was there while I was working on the book! So I figured why not put it in there! I did that in Dear Carolina too. When I was in New York and Palm Beach I just slid them into the story.

I loved the relationship between- Lovey, D-Daddy and Annabelle.  Did you grandparents play a part in the inspiration of this bond? I am extremely close with my grandparents and spent so much time with them growing up. They have been a huge influence on my life and the advice in the book, in particular, is something that has been passed down from my grandparents.

One of Annabelle’s struggles was deciding whether to follow her head or heart.  Do you prefer one over another when making decisions in your life?  How do you know when to trust one over the other? I’ve always been pretty intuitive, so I make a lot of decisions with my heart. My head always gets to weigh in but I think so many of life’s biggest decisions really can’t be reasoned out. They have to be felt.

As a writer, where is your favorite place to write? Anywhere with a water view. We have a place on the coast, and I just love being there, at my beautiful desk, looking out over the waterway. It’s so calming!

Name 3 blissful things that you can’t live without? Chocolate, baths and champagne!

What is the first thing you do when you complete a book? Start the next one. Haha! When I’m finished with one I usually have another that has been fighting for my attention for quite some time, and I’m so excited to be able to give it some attention. There’s usually a lot of the answers to number six as well!

What was the last book that you read? The last book I read was The Coincidence of Coconut Cake by Amy Reichert. Fabulous book! Right now I am reading The Nest and Big Magic.

While on tour what is a must-have beauty product in your make-up bag? A very moisturizing face lotion. My skin gets really dry in hotels, and I think when it’s moisturized it keeps me from looking tired.

Are you looking forward to any books that are coming out in 2016? I can’t wait to read Brandi Granett’s Triple Love Score! And Love, Luck and Lemon Pie from Amy Reichert. I’m sure there are dozens and dozens of others as well!
