What’s in my Bookish {Beauty} Bag? ~ Nicole Waggoner

I have been a huge Nicole Waggoner fan since the first Circus of Women book, Center Ring.  She is a fellow beauty lover so we instantly clicked plus our love of books.  I was so thrilled to be able to take a peak at the second novel in the trilogy, The Act, before readers.  If you look closely at the end I may or may not be mentioned in the acknowledgements 😉  I was thrilled when Nicole shared her bag with me.  Read on because she has some great beauty must-haves and you will see she is more than just a fabulous author she is a beauty aficionado too!

What is your bag of choice?
Hello! Thank you for inviting me to talk bags, beauty, and books today! In the summer, I prefer small shoulder bags. I am currently carrying a Kate Spade Hobo in “Pebble”. Isn’t that a precious name for a color? It’s a light, airy, pinkish-tan. My briefcase is a McKlein in Mint. I highly recommend the McKlein to any woman who travels for work. It has been a dream and snaps right on to my carry on!
What are your top favorite beauty picks?
I am fanatical about sunscreen. I use Elta MD every day. It is light, wears well under primer and make up, and never clogs my pores! Currently, I am using Naked skin foundation. I love its silky texture and the way it blurs light to improve my complexion…especially in pictures 🙂  Ofra is my very favorite eyeshadow and highlighter. Every pigment is gorgeous and makes eyes POP! My BFF recently gave me a set of LipSense lipstick and I was immediately hooked. Carmel Apple and Aussie Rose are my go to colors, but I have amassed quite the rainbow of shades!  Isn’t it great when a product outperforms your expectations?  Last, but not least, I have to rave about Stilla eyeliner. I was hesitant to try it because, well, I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler and didn’t want to wear Charlie Brown’s Chevron on each eyelid for twelve hours. Thankfully, the tip is superfine and hugs the lash line effortlessly. Stilla is so smudge-proof that I even used it to draw (somewhat poorly) Malificient eyes on my five-year-old for Halloween. I pair it with Better Than Sex Mascara and bash about my day, allergy eyes and all, with no traces of the dreaded raccoon bags. Before I found this product, I hadn’t worn mascara on my lower lashes since a short-lived Kate Moss phase in the 90s.
What do you always carry in your bag/purse/carry-on for beauty products?
Sunscreen. Again. Both mine and my children’s for reapplication. We live in Oklahoma and spend a ton of time outdoors. I also carry matcha powder with me to mix into water and teas. Everyone else in my house thinks it tastes like feet, but I adore it. My daughter’s Beanie Boos travel in small herds and I am sure to have at least one in my bag at all times. This one is named Grayson because she has heard so many women comment on my ‘Patrick Grayson’ character at events, etc., and she quote “wanted a kind name that started with ‘G’. He is a boy giraffe and boy giraffes should always be nice to girl giraffes. If they’re not, the girl giraffes should run away super fast like a cheetah.” I usually have Prisma colors and table conversation cards as well. Other than that, I always keep a Sharpie handy to sign books. Every time we go to Target or Barnes and Noble, I always sign the copies on the shelf. I adore Indie bookstores and do the same in OKC. There are, unfortunately, none where I live.  I came across a signed copy of Austen’s Persuasion in a used bookstore once and have never forgotten the thrill! CVCBB Beach Wave spray is another bag staple for me. I swear it’s the only way I am surviving the “mullet phase” of growing out a pixie. My adorable make up bags from Bliss, Beauty, and Books ride in every bag I carry! I beam every time I open them! Thank you, again, for being so thoughtful! I carry journals in my briefcase, purse, and gym bag. I also keep one on my nightstand.  I have to write plot ideas down immediately or I will forget as soon as one of my little loves says ‘Mommy.”
What are you currently reading?
I am currently listening to Jane Green’s The Sunshine Sisters and reading In This Moment by Karma Brown. Lift and Seperate by Marilyn  (check spelling) is on deck, along with Donna Everheart’s The Education of Dixie Dupree.
And any other fun item/must-have that you always have with you?
Hand Sanitizer, Band-Aides, Mini Toothbrushes, Bookmarks, and collapsible reusable shopping bags with theatre quotes like “The play is THE thing.”

Always by Sarah Jio

Always by Sarah Jio was the first book I read of hers and it certainly will not be the last.  I loved this book.  The story, the characters, the setting and time were all perfection.  Always is part drama, part romance all set against the 90’s music scene, a time that I loved and loved reading about.  If you want a book that will suck you in within the first few paragraphs this is it.  Plus, I love the Sarah’s connection the the premise of the book, make sure you read at the end as it’s a good little author tidbit, not to be missed.

Highly recommend this book!  If you love a good romance with an ending you didn’t expect then this is it.  It would be the perfect companion for Spring Break, trust me.

I Liked My Life by Abby Fabiaschi

9781250084880

It’s a new year and I have started my reading list for 2017!  With that, I have also revived my blog which has been “sleeping” for the last few months as being a mom of two is quite the challenge.  I wish I had been sleeping too, buuuuuut  I know sleep and I will meet again some day, lol!  To start off the reading year I just finished up Abby Fabiaschi’s I Liked My Life.  Set in a town just right next door to where I live, Wellesley, MA, it’s a beautiful story about a mother, Maddy, who commits suicide and leaves her daughter and husband to pick up the pieces and start their life over with out her.  Each chapter is narrated by each character experiencing life without her including Maddy herself.  What I can say is not only do you get a heartbreaking story about a family who is suffering without a mother and wife but a shocking twist as well which is one of the best ingredients you can add to a story.  I loved it.  I thought the writing was thoughtful and the story was unique.  If this is the type of stories stored in Fabiashi’s mind we are all in for a treat as she will have lots to share in the literary world!  This is a phenomenal debut and Abby should be on your favorite authors list after this gem. It is definitely one to add to your 2017 list!

About the book via Goodreads ~

Sophia Marcus, 21, has already mapped out every aspect of her glamorous life as a Hollywood actor on her vision board. But her life right now in Toronto is anything but exciting. Attending fruitless auditions during the day and working at a douche-y club at night, Sophia is starting to feel like she’s going nowhere…slowly.

Demi Michaels, Sophia’s best friend, didn’t go to college after high school. Short of ideas for her own future, she puts her energy into building the perfect relationship with an older man. And when that relationship crashes and burns, Demi is left to pick up the pieces.

Sophia’s friend (and Demi’s frenemy) Leandra Hunting doesn’t give a crap about hard work or a loving relationship. She has other plans for her future. After college graduation, Leandra sets out to travel the world in the yachts, planes and limos of ridiculously wealthy men. Will any of them be able to show her what love really means–if she can take off her Chanel sunglasses long enough to see it?

Set in the exotic, intoxicating worlds of Hollywood, Thailand, and London, Bliss paints a relatable portrait of life in your early twenties with equal parts optimism and fear, hope and disappointment, expectation and reality. It’s the Age of Uncertainty when you can count on nothing, but, if you’re lucky enough to have one truly great friend, you can survive just about anything.

Will You Won’t You Want Me? by Nora Zelevansky

9781250001276

Are you looking for a fun, fabulous and fearless female read?  Then grab Will You Won’t You Want Me? by Nora Zelevansky.  It’s the perfect pick for anyone at a crossroads in their lives who are questioning what are they doing or where should they be going?  Perfect for new graduates or adults, we have all been there, looking for a little inspiration, Majorie Plum is the girl we all need in our lives. Zelevansky writes a funny, touching and romantic read that was impossible not to get sucked into.

Marjorie Plum was the popular girl in high-school.  Beautiful and sought after with all the guys she was the “it girl”.  Fast forward, high school is over and the real world has begun.  She is at a good job, living in the city with her best friend Vera and living the good life until  she loses her job, her best friend ditches her and the apartment for her boyfriend and Marjorie is forced to reevaluate her life.  With no money and no direction of where to go she heads back to her parents to get their help and advice.  Her Mom has a lead for a roommate looking for another roommate and so begins the relationship between Marjorie aka Madge and Fred, a little pip squeak of a girl who adds the perfect balance to Madge’s life.  In the meantime Madge is also dealing with Mac, her old interest from high school who is still in love with her but she isn’t sure she is love with him.  With Fred’s help and spirit, Madge starts to pick up the pieces to her life and move forward.  For one Madge fills in for Fred in a tutoring job with little Belinda, “Belly”, who is trying to survive in the horrible trenches of middle school.  Madge is the perfect person to help her come out of her shell and the two form an instant bond.  Madge also meets Gus, who owns a film business with Fred’s brother.  They decide to hire Madge temporarily to fill in for some administrative work.  With all the piece starting to fall into place Madge is feeling accomplished and successful.  But will it all work out in it the end?  Is Mac the one true love for her or is there someone right in front of her who is truly her destiny?  Madge’s journey may not be an easy one but she learns many lessons along the way and discovers she is stronger and smarter than she thinks she is.

Nora_Zelevansky

I loved this book and think it’s the perfect read for anyone who needs a little direction in their life.  Madge is in all of us.  We have all been there before where we are questioning everything and feel as though nothing is going our way.  She is the underdog who reminds us all that everything works out in the end and to be thankful for the people we meet and the experiences we have along the way.  Zelevansky has a creative way of telling the story which made it that much more charming.  I am excited to see what Nora has in store as this book is getting a lot of well deserved praise.  Graduations are coming up and there is no doubt that this it the perfect gift!

Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid

maybe-in-another-life-9781476776880_hr

So I may be a little late the the Taylor Jenkins Reid party but I made it and I am SO glad I did!  I had Maybe in Another Life sitting high in my TBR pile just waiting for that moment when I needed a feel good, girls book.  After hitting up a group of well established readers this was recommended over and over so I knew it was time.  To say this book was feel good would be an understatement.  Taylor Jenkins Reid is the real deal, writing about real relationships and people who you seem to know from somewhere in your life.  Maybe in Another Life is like a favorite movie or refreshing cocktail you just want to enjoy over and over.

Maybe in Another Life centers around Hannah who has recently moved back to her hometown of California.  She is at a crossroads and does not know what she wants to do with her life and whether or not she will stay in California long term.  She moves in with her best friend Gabby and her husband Mark.  One evening they decided to welcome Hannah back and meet out a few high school friends as well as Hannah’s old flame Ethan.  Hannah is overwhelmed with the feelings she has when she sees Ethan as does he.  As the evening comes to an end Hannah is conflicted with going home with Ethan for the night or leaving the past in the past and going back with Gabby and Mark.  Here is where the story takes a turn- the reader is brought through each decision between alternating chapters.  As each story unfolds we see tragedy, heartbreak, love and the importance of friends and family in Hannah’s life.  I do not want to giveaway too much as I do not want to contain spoilers.  Will Hannah live happily ever after with Ethan or will going home with Gabby and Mark be a life changing decision?

As I said before I had only heard amazing things about Taylor Jenkins Reid and her novels and now I can see why.  This light-hearted story is deeply rooted by its complex characters.  Reid’s way of making these characters so tangible as well as their relationships, makes the reader connect even more to the story.  I loved the alternating stories and was deeply satisfied and fulfilled at the end.  I am so looking forward to her new release One True Loves and will be sure to post about that as well.  Side note: I may be partial, she is a Massachusetts gal just like me which makes me like her even more 🙂

The new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Devil Wears Prada and Revenge Wears Prada—a dishy tell-all about a beautiful tennis prodigy who, after changing coaches, suddenly makes headlines on and off the court.

Charlotte “Charlie” Silver has always been a good girl. She excelled at tennis early, coached by her father, a former player himself, and soon became one of the top juniors in the world. When she leaves UCLA—and breaks her boyfriend’s heart—to turn pro, Charlie joins the world’s best athletes who travel eleven months a year, competing without mercy for Grand Slam titles and Page Six headlines.

After Charlie suffers a disastrous loss and injury on Wimbledon’s Centre Court, she fires her longtime coach and hires Todd Feltner, a legend of the men’s tour, who is famous for grooming champions. Charlie is his first-ever female player, and he will not let her forget it. He is determined to change her good-girl image—both on the court and off—and transform her into a ruthless competitor who will not only win matches and climb the rankings, but also score magazine covers and seven-figure endorsement deals. Her not-so-secret affair with the hottest male player in the world, sexy Spaniard Marco Vallejo, has people whispering, and it seems like only a matter of time before the tabloids and gossip blogs close in on all the juicy details. Charlie’s ascension to the social throne parallels her rising rank on the women’s tour—but at a major price.

Lauren Weisberger’s novel brings us exclusive behind-the-scenes details from all the Grand Slam tournaments: the US Open, the French Open, the Australian Open, and Wimbledon. Charlie Silver jets around the globe, plays charity matches aboard Mediterranean megayachts, models in photo shoots on Caribbean beaches, walks the red carpet at legendary player parties, and sidesteps looming scandals—all while trying to keep her eyes on the real prize. In this sexy, unputdownable read about young tennis stars who train relentlessly to compete at the highest levels while living in a world obsessed with good looks and Instagram followers, Charlie must discover the secret to having it all—or finally shatter the illusion for good.

Below are the addicting and stunning novels of Emily Giffin.  I have met her twice on tour and she is exactly how you would expect- fabulous on all levels and really all of our best friend, right?

In this dazzling new novel, Emily Giffin, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Something Borrowed, Where We Belong, and The One & Only introduces a pair of sisters who find themselves at a crossroads.

Growing up, Josie and Meredith Garland shared a loving, if sometimes contentious relationship. Josie was impulsive, spirited, and outgoing; Meredith hardworking, thoughtful, and reserved. When tragedy strikes their family, their different responses to the event splinter their delicate bond.

Fifteen years later, Josie and Meredith are in their late thirties, following very different paths. Josie, a first grade teacher, is single—and this close to swearing off dating for good. What she wants more than the right guy, however, is to become a mother—a feeling that is heightened when her ex-boyfriend’s daughter ends up in her class. Determined to have the future she’s always wanted, Josie decides to take matters into her own hands.

On the outside, Meredith is the model daughter with the perfect life. A successful attorney, she’s married to a wonderful man, and together they’re raising a beautiful four-year-old daughter. Yet lately, Meredith feels dissatisfied and restless, secretly wondering if she chose the life that was expected of her rather than the one she truly desired.

As the anniversary of their tragedy looms and painful secrets from the past begin to surface, Josie and Meredith must not only confront the issues that divide them, but also come to terms with their own choices. In their journey toward understanding and forgiveness, both sisters discover they need each other more than they knew . . . and that in the recipe for true happiness, love always comes first.

Emotionally honest and utterly enthralling, First Comes Love is a story about family, friendship, and the courage to follow your own heart—wherever that may lead.
