What’s in my Bookish {Beauty} Bag? ~ Jamie Brenner

Jamie Brenner is not only a fabulous author but she is a former beauty insider as well who shares the same love for beauty products, so basically my kind of gal.  I am currently reading and loving her newest, The Forever Summer, OUT TODAY!  It is the perfect “Pre-Summer” book cocktail.  I mean the cover alone is stunning and makes me long for salty beach hair and a golden tan.  I was thrilled when Jamie shared her chic black tote that has some amazing beauty products and believe me you will want to listen to her beauty recommendations as she is an expert ❤

Marin Bishop has always played by the rules, and it’s paid off: on the cusp of thirty she has a handsome fiancé, a prestigious Manhattan legal career, and her father’s hard-won admiration. But with one careless mistake at work, Marin suddenly finds herself unemployed and alone. Before she can summon the courage to tell her parents, a young woman appears, claiming to be Marin’s half-sister. Seeking answers, Marin agrees to join her on a soul-searching journey to Cape Cod, to meet the family she didn’t even know she had.

As the summer unfolds at her grandmother’s beachside B&B, it becomes clear that her half-sister’s existence is just the first in a series of truths that will shake Marin’s beliefs–in love, and in her own identity–to the core. Filled with shocking revelations, heartfelt romance, and resilient women banding together against the most unexpected twists of fate, THE FOREVER SUMMER is an emotionally resonant page-turner, and a delicious escape for any season.

What is your bag of choice?

I always carry a purse. I found an amazing Cleo & Patek bag on sale in SoHo and it’s huge and easily fits all of my beauty products, laptop, and a book. I don’t like changing bags so I will carry the same bag every day and night endlessly unless I’m going somewhere really fancy and I’m forced to switch to an evening bag that is inevitably too small. And every time I switch bags I forget to bring something I need.

What are your top favorite beauty picks?

Laura Mercier matte translucent powder

Trish McAvoy gel eyeliner in Deep Aubergine

Nars lipstick in Shanghai Express

Organic lip balm from Violets Are Blue.

Zoya nail polish because it’s free of the harsher chemicals in other brands.

What do you always carry in your bag/purse/carry-on for beauty products?

I always carry my The Forever Summer cosmetics bag, of course! And it’s filled with enough make-up to cover the “What if” occurrence of getting caught in rains storm, all make-up washed away, and I have to start over from scratch. This has, of yet, never happened. But I believe in being prepared. So, I have my concealer, eyeliner, lipstick and translucent powder at all times. And moisturizer. And lip balm.

What are you currently reading?

An early copy of The Awkward Age by Francesca Segal and a biography of Peggy Guggenheim

Any other fun item/must-have that you always have with you?

I always have a hat. In the winter, it’s a knit hat from Free People. (And by winter, I mean any day under forty-five degrees.) In the summer, I carry a baseball hat to shield my face from the sun. Also in the summer I have this little fan device that plugs into my iPhone. It’s a lifesaver when stuck on a subway car with broken air-conditioning ☺

Beach Bites- Karma Brown and Megan Abbott

Hi readers!  Sorry I have been MIA for the last few days.  I just welcomed my second baby last week so I have been a bit preoccupied 🙂  I will be off and on the blog over the next few weeks and then back to my regular review schedule come fall.  Right before I went into the hospital I read the amazing The Choices We Make by Karma Brown.  Then while I was in the hospital I finished up the thriller You Will Know Me by Megan Abbott.  Both fantastic in their own right but completely different.  Read below for a quick “bite” on both!

The Choices We Make by Karma Brown

Brown quickly became a favorite author of mine with her debut- Come Away With Me.  In The Choices We Make she tackles on the tough choices between two best friends.  One is struggling with infertility the other a successful mom who wants to give the gift of motherhood to her friend.  As things progress both are put up against the odds and their true friendship will be tested emotionally and ethically.  Get ready for tears with this novel as Brown once again takes a serious situation and pulls at the readers heartstrings.  This book again solidified her as a favorite and from the first two novels, Brown is only getting started.

You Will Know Me by Megan Abbott

This fabulous thriller kept me guessing until the end.  Abbott takes the reader into the cutthroat world of gymnastics where the death of one of their own makes them question everything.  The sport is intense and dark  not made any better by the parents.  Jealousy and competition are everyday emotions for the gymnasts so when they are pushed to their edge the community will do anything to get ahead and hide their secrets.  Abbott is the real deal when it comes to a classic thriller.  She writes dark and twisty, my favorite thriller characteristics.  You do not know where the book is going therefore you are turning the pages until the wee hours of the night.

*Thanks to Mira and Little Brown for a review copies of both.

Here’s To Us by Elin Hildebrand

We all know, as readers, that Elin Hilderbrand is the queen of beach reads.  Each summer I anxiously await her gorgeous covers and blissful, beachy plots.  I mean any book set on Nantucket you automatically can smell the salt air and feel the sand between your toes.  Plus I am a New England gal and love that Elin loves her town so much to continuously write about it.  I have been and if I lived there year round I would be that in love with it too!  Here’s to Us was quintessential Elin and I soaked it up in merely a few days.  She once again can continue to reign as a beach read queen and this book just put another jewel on her crown.

Here’s To Us centers around Laurel, Belinda and Scarlett all former wives of celebrity chef – Deacon Thorpe.  All completely different they are reunited on Nantucket upon hearing that Deacon has passed away.  Buck, a former employee and confidant of Deacons, wants everyone to gather at Deacon’s old house to celebrate his life and spread his ashes.  Along with Deacon’s children with each wife, they gather for a few days that are filled with drama, loss and secrets.  Set against the beautiful setting of sun, sea and sand each character is dealing with the loss of Deacon in their own way.  Can this eclectic group come together and mourn the loss of someone they all loved or will greed and jealousy divide them and have them leaving the island with regret?

Here’s To Us is the perfect book to keep the pages turning under the hot sun.  It has all the main ingredients to prove this- amazing characters, a complex plot and the perfect amount of drama, love and lust.  Hilderbrand summer after summer garners new fans with these page turners and this fan has yet to be disappointed.  She just has a way with a summer read and I think it’s the fact that she lives and breathes Nantucket life as well as taking beautiful, beachy vacations.  She gets it.  And by “it” I mean she knows what we readers want in the perfect beach read.  Thank you Elin, time and time again for making our summer days and nights that much better!

*Thanks to Little Brown for sending a review copy.
