Accessorize Your Bookshelves #booksarechic

With the start of a new month, the month of FASHION, I thought it would be fitting to compile a list of my favorite, most chic reads.  I was also feeling inspired after Stella Artois release their latest campaign featuring Sarah Jessica Parker, bringing back our most beloved, Carrie Bradshaw.  I didn’t realize how much I missed her until I saw her back in action- tulle, stilettos and all.  There are so many books on fashion, designers, glam, etc. so this is just a slice of the fashion pie.  I have been collecting Hollywood glam and fashion coffee table books and bios for years and they are something I still love to collect.  Lots of the best ones are out of print, so the thrill of the hunt at used bookstores or EBAY is just as exciting as finding a fashion bargain!  Let me know your favorites so I can add them to my list 😉

Open Book with Amina Akhtar

Can I just say this book had me at THIS cover.  When I read that this book is a cross between, The Devil Wears Prada and Dexter, I was sold.  Amina Akhtar’s debut has received rave reviews and even though this is her first novel, Akhtar is no novice to writing.  She previously has written for Vogue, Elle, Style.com, the list continues.  I was honored she took the time to chat with me to share her love for coffee, all things horror and Bravo TV- #besties 😉

“Darkly satisfying.”—Martha Stewart Living
“A diabolical page-turner . . . impossible to put down.”—Forbes
“Darkly funny.”—Fashionista
“As awesome as it sounds.”—Book Riot

A thrilling take on the fashion world, #FashionVictim is Dexter meets The Devil Wears Prada.

Fashion editor Anya St. Clair is on the verge of greatness. Her wardrobe is to die for. Her social media is killer. And her career path is littered with the bodies of anyone who got in her way. She’s worked hard to get where she is, but she doesn’t have everything.

Not like Sarah Taft. Anya’s obsession sits one desk away. Beautiful, stylish, and rich, she was born to be a fashion world icon. From her beach-wave blonde hair to her on-trend nail art, she’s a walking editorial spread. And Anya wants to be her friend. Her best friend. Her only friend.

But when Sarah becomes her top competition for a promotion, Anya’s plan to win her friendship goes into overdrive. In order to beat Sarah…she’ll have to become her. Friendly competition may turn fatal, but as they say in fashion: One day you’re in, and the next day you’re dead

1. What three celebrities/authors/figures- living or dead, would you want to have a bookclub with?

Just three? Some mix of Jordan Peele, Stephen King, Gillian Flynn, Caroline Kepnes, and Edward Gorey. I love all things horror, creepy and macabre.

2. Current binge series?

I don’t think I’ve binged on a series properly in a while. I could use some suggestions!

3. Last favorite book?

Providence! It’s so good I couldn’t put it down. Caroline’s characters are incredible and real and I love them.

4. What 3 things to you pack in your bag for your dream vacation?  Where is it?

My iPad so I can read books without lugging them around, cute shoes I can walk in, and Nars lip pencils. I’d go to London. I love London and it’s been ages since I was able to go back.

5. Sunday NYT or US Weekly?

Sunday Styles for sure.

6. Last person you sent a text message to?

My friend Daniel who helped get the FV pilot made. (It’s TBD currently.)

7. Book you read that you wished you wrote?

Christodora by Tim Murphy. I don’t wish I wrote it but when I read it, I was almost angry at how good it is. Tim is masterful. After every page I had to stop and marvel at the way he wove his stories and characters.

8. Do you have a teacher who encouraged you to become a writer?

None that stick out but my parents have always been really encouraging. But they also wanted me to be able to support myself, so I went into journalism for most of my career.

9. Do you listen to music while you write? If so, who?

Not really. If I need to drown out noise I’ll put on some classical music. But anything with words is distracting.

10. Describe your writing space?

I’ll write anywhere I can. I think having worked in digital, you learn to not be so precious about it. You have deadlines, and your cubicle is probably the least inspiring place in the world. But you have to get it done! So for now I write on my bed with my dog next to me. She snores.

11. Coffee or tea?

So much coffee.

12. Do you have a favorite book that you gift?

Yes! Big Magic by Liz Gilbert. If you’re feeling stuck—whether in writing or life—read it. It helps me get out of my head.

13. Book that you wished they would make a movie out of?

It’s not out yet but PJ Vernon’s When You Find Me is utterly riveting and incredible. It’s a southern gothic thriller that you’re going to love.

14. If you could have one song as the theme song of your life what would it be and why?

She’s Lost Control by Joy Division. It’s been my favorite song since my teen years. Because really, aren’t we all losing control a bit?

15. What/Who inspires you?

My friends. I’ve luckily managed to surround myself with really talented, supportive, and bad ass women and men who go after what they want. They have ideas and the next day they make them reality. It’s incredible to witness.

16. Bravo reality TV- yes or no?

Of course! We all need guilty pleasures!

17. Favorite Instagram account?

Juniper Foxx! Who doesn’t need photos and videos of animals to brighten their day? Also, the Bloggess’ account is a close second. Fashion wise, Nicolette Mason is someone I am lowkey obsessed with.

18. If you could name just one lipstick after a book, what would you call it and what shade would it be?

A Nars pencil in Anya Red. It’d be the perfect shade of blood red.

19. Current #TBR pile?

Sister of Mine and The Widow of Malabar Hill are at the top of the pile.

20. Best advice you’ve ever received?

Don’t give up. Writing is full of rejection. If you want to write, write. And if you’re lucky, you’ll get that one yes you need to get published. But even if you don’t, keep writing!

What’s in my Bookish {Beauty} Bag? ~ Rosie Nixon

Being royally obsessed I am a huge fan of Hello! Magazine and when I discovered their  editor-in-chief was writing a novel I was sold.  Rosie Nixon is just as fabulous as her characters, Amber and Mona in her debut, The Stylist.  A little Devil Wears Prada with a sprinkle of the red carpet and hollywood glam this book is the perfect read to kick off all the glitz of New York Fashion week!  I was beyond thrilled when Rosie opened her Stella McCartney bag for me and shared her must-have beauty items and no one knows beauty better than her- its Hello! magazine people!!! ❤

Stylist The_PB

via Amazon ~

In the tradition of The Devil Wears Prada comes Rosie Nixon’s debut novel, which follows a young woman who is thrown into the fast-paced world of fashion and glamour as she’s forced to navigate the treacherous Hollywood red carpets…while finding a fairytale love of her own.

“A stylish, fun read, I absolutely loved it!”—Jackie Collins

Amber Green loves working at Smith’s, London’s ultra-exclusive boutique frequented by everyone who’s anyone, including Mona Armstrong, the stylist to the stars. She is fierce, demanding, and can make or break a career with a snap of her manicured nails.

When Mona’s latest assistant walks out and with awards season arriving faster than you can say “Rodeo Drive”, Amber finds herself agreeing to work for one of the most infamous—and volatile—women in Hollywood. And the stars aren’t much better. Amber’s life is turned inside out as she becomes familiar with all Hollywood has to offer, on and off the red carpet.

As she begins to enjoy life in the dressing rooms of the hottest stars, Amber discovers she’s the one in the spotlight when she catches the attention of two very different men. But Mona’s behavior is growing increasingly erratic and unless Amber can out-style everyone in Hollywood, she’s in danger of being Mona’s latest fashion victim.

Bookish Beauty Bag

What is your bag of choice?

Stella McCartney metallic shoulder bag. This has been my go-to day-into-evening bag for months now – I love the slightly rock chick edge and it looks as great with jeans as with an LBD or even a gown. I admire Stella’s standpoint on sustainable fashion and how she has pioneered using new alternative materials to leather and fur.

What are your top favorite beauty picks?

I’ve been a big fan of Benefit for years and particularly like their mascaras and bronzers – a quick pop of Sugarbomb on my cheeks and I’m instantly perked up! I recently discovered Dolce & Gabbana make-up and it’s great quality, I also love By Terry make-up.

For skincare, I’m a Murad girl, I wear their entire range – the City Skin Age Defence SPF 50 is my favourite, I have quite fair skin and always wear a high SPF. Shu Uemura beauty products are gorgeous and effective too. As I get older, I pay more attention to the science of skincare – the right products really can make a big difference in slowing the ageing process. I’m lucky that I work in an industry (magazines) where it’s important to keep on top of the latest beauty brands and trends.

What do you always carry in your bag/purse/carry-on for beauty products?

Always a benefit Bal Gal BANG! mascara in black, Benefit Sugarbomb, Dolce & Gabbana ‘Isabella’ lipstick which is like a cross between a lipbalm and a lipstick, although I often wear Maybelline SuperStay 24 Colour lipstick in Rose Dust because it doesn’t come off when I kiss my children! I generally carry a small purse, and I’m quite low maintenance, so there isn’t room for much else beauty-wise!

What are you currently reading?

I nearly always have my nose in a newspaper or the pages of HELLO! magazine, of which I am editor-in-chief. Reading magazines is part of my job and very much in my blood. I read novels for escapism. I’m currently reading The Image Of You by Adele Parks, who is a friend as well as a brilliant author. And I recently loved The Light We Lost by Jill Santopolo. I only wish I had more time to curl up with a book.

And any other fun item/must-have that you always have with you 🙂

Always my iPhone X – I will fly into a panic if I’ve left home without it. I love my limited edition HELLO! phone case, which was created by CHAOS as part of a fashion project I spearheaded celebrating HELLO!’s 30th Birthday in May.

I also have sunglasses with me – I have quite an addiction to sunglasses, just like my central character Mona Armstrong  – my current favourites are by Ralph Lauren, but I switch them up depending on my mood and what I’m wearing. I can go from Ray-Bans one day, to mirrored Le Specs or classic Pradas the next. It’s all about the accessories, darling! (Just ask Amber Green…)

items in bag: Lulu Guinness purse, Barkleys peppermints, Dolce & Gabbana lipstick,  Benefit mascara, Ralph Lauren sunglasses, HELLO! x CHAOS phone case, iPhone X

What’s in my Bookish {Beauty} Bag? ~ Kaira Rouda

Kaira Rouda is one of my favorite authors.  The Goodbye Year was one of my favorite picks of 2016- a must read if you haven’t.  When I heard about her latest, Best Day Ever coming out, I knew this would be a hit.  A suspenseful thriller just in time for the most frightful time of year.  I was so excited when she opened up her stunning Gucci bag for readers and shared her fabulous beauty picks and chilling current reads.

via Amazon ~

In the bestselling, page-turning vein of The Couple Next Door and The Dinner, Kaira Rouda weaves a gripping, tautly suspenseful tale of deception and betrayal dark enough to destroy a marriage…or a life.

“I glance at my wife as she climbs into the passenger seat, and I am bursting with confidence. Today will be everything I’ve promised her…and more…”

Paul Strom has the perfect life: a glittering career as an advertising executive, a beautiful wife, two healthy boys and a big house in a wealthy suburb. And he’s the perfect husband: breadwinner, protector, provider. That’s why he’s planned a romantic weekend for his wife, Mia, at their lake house, just the two of them. And he’s promised today will be the best day ever.

But as Paul and Mia drive out of the city and toward the countryside, a spike of tension begins to wedge itself between them and doubts start to arise. How much do they trust each other? And how perfect is their marriage, or any marriage, really?

Forcing us to ask ourselves just how well we know those who are closest to us, Best Day Ever crackles with dark energy, spinning ever tighter toward its shocking conclusion.

Praise for Best Day Ever

“An unreliable and chillingly unrepentant narrator.” —Kimberly McCreight, New York Times bestselling author of Reconstructing Amelia and The Outliers

“Highly entertaining and truly surprising!” —Kate Moretti, New York Times bestselling author of The Vanishing Year

IMG_9431

What is your bag of choice?

Thanks so much for asking me, Courtney! The funny thing is, if I can get away with it, I don’t carry a purse at all. You’ll see me running around town with a wallet and my keys. BUT I do know purses are necessary most of the time so each year I’ll splurge on one. This year, I was in the mood for red, something to compliment BEST DAY EVER’s cover, so this is my bag for this season. Just don’t expect to see me with it very often.

What are your top favorite beauty picks?

Living in Southern California means slathering on sunscreen each morning, and then reapplying throughout the day. I love Colore Science Suncanny powder for an added layer of protection, and of course, my sunglasses and a hat. Burt’s Bee lip color and lip gloss are also favorites. My favorite powder is La Prarie, and it lasts forever. I’d be lost with out a hair tie. I wish I’d invented them. They are in my purse, on my wrist, in my pants pockets – everywhere! And you’ll see my change purse, for parking meter change and if you aren’t familiar with FEED, it’s a fabulous company creating products that help feed the world. I’m a big fan of brands who give back, and FEED is a great example. (www.feedprojects.com)

What do you always carry on for beauty products for travel?

The items I mentioned above, plus I love the LA Fresh line of healthy sanitizers and hand cream in convenient packages. EmergenC packets – at least two – raspberry flavor just in case I sense people are sick around me – or if I feel it coming on. Oh, and a travel size toothbrush and toothpaste. I’m a tooth-brushing fanatic. And I try to have an inspirational, calming magazine for travel. I love yoga, and Yoga Journal magazine is great zen and inspiration.

What are you currently reading?

There are so many good books to choose from this fall! At the moment, I’m reading my friend J.T. Ellison’s Lie to Me. It’s so good. I’ve been on a psychological suspense reading kick lately and I’m loving it. There are so many different great books to pick up and read to scare your self before sleep. 😉

And any other fun item/must-have that you always have with you?

My husband decided to run for congress, so I’m always handing out bumper stickers and answering questions about his campaign. It’s been a wonderful experience, for the most part and I’m so proud of him. With my new novel BEST DAY EVER just out, I keep my black sharpie with me, just in case I’m near a bookstore and I can pop in and sign stock. I love talking to booksellers. Their passion for reading and sharing books with their customers is what keeps us authors able to do what we love.

What’s in my Bookish {Beauty} Bag? ~ Jennifer O’Regan

IMG_9542

Known as the “Book Champion” by our favorite authors, Jennifer O’Regan is an ultimate book beauty. In addition to fostering a love of literacy within her underprivileged high school students, Jennifer has many noteworthy philanthropic accolades. During her husband’s plight with cancer, she single-handedly raised over 3,000 books for the Johns Hopkins Hospital Oncology Patient Library. Jennifer now shares her unbridled passion for reading via Confessions of a Bookaholic—a page dedicated to celebrating female authors.  I was a superfan of her ‘Confessions’ page and then through the wonderful internet, penned a friendship connected by none other than books, beauty and all things fabulous!  I am so excited she let us glimpse into her fabulous Louis Vuitton which is filled with ah-mazing beauty products.  She really is a girl after my own heart ❤

FullSizeRender

What is your bag of choice?

I am a purse fiend! My go-to bag at the moment is my Louis Vuitton Métis Hobo. Functional yet oh-so-chic! It has a spacious, well-organized interior and it can be carried in the hand, on the arm or across the body, thanks to its extra-long removable strap.

What are your top favorite beauty picks?

I use Chanel Sublimage Le Fluide moisturizer daily. It’s positively decadent and a lot cheaper than Botox (ha!). I’m also obsessed with Chanel Inimitable mascara. This lush, long-wearing product delivers it all: precise separation, length and curl for a natural, multi-dimensional effect.

What do you always carry in your bag/purse/carry-on for beauty products?

I carry a Chanel Éclat Lumière highlighter face pen for quick touch-ups. And, there’s always lip gloss in my bag.

What are you currently reading?

Like my dear friend Brenda Janowitz, I’m always reading a season ahead. Determining which galleys will be best received by my followers. Currently, I’m reading an ARC of Laura Dave’s highly anticipated HELLO, SUNSHINE.

Any other fun items/must-haves that you always carry?

I never leave home without my wallet, iPhone 7 (in its bedazzled Kate Spade case!), Tory Burch medicine bag (Zyrtec, Advil, hair ties, tissues, etc.), and last—but certainly not least—Chanel sunglasses (which really do cover a multitude of sins!).

Food Whore by Jessica Tom

Food Whore

Would it be ok to write a review that just said, “Get this book.  You wont regret it.”?  I mean that is how I feel about Food Whore by Jessica Tom.  I loved it that much and could have read about 20 more chapters.  Yup, that good.  Tom, a debut author, wrote a novel with all the main ingredients, no pun intended, for a fabulous NYC story- fashion, food and love.  This book filled my craving for a page turner with a fierce cast of characters, amazing clothes and the glittering streets of NYC nightlife.

Food Whore takes place in New York and centers around Tia.  Tia is studying at NYU’s Food Studies program.  Her dream internship is to study with Helen Lansky,  a famous cookbook author.  Instead, Tia gets placed at an upscale New York restaurant working coat check among other miscellaneous tasks.  One night Tia meets Michael Saltz, a New York food critic whose critiques are everything if you own a restaurant or are a chef in NYC.  Michael decides to take Tia under his wing for a secret project that will change Tia’s life in more ways than one with the promise that he will set her up with Helen.  An all expense paid account at Bergdorf’s, handsome chef’s and meals a king would dream of, Tia sets out on a chance of a lifetime.  Sounds amazing right?  What seems like a perfect set-up isn’t all it turns out to be.  Tia discovers that the hard work comes with a price if you want to land that dream job.

Jessica Tom

I do not like to compare books as I think they are like little people, their own individual identities BUT I will say this is slightly reminiscent of The Devil Wears Prada.  If you loved that book as much as I did then you will devour this.  Tom writes a page turner from the heart, as she is not only a writer but a food blogger as well.  This is a girl who knows what she’s talking about and you can tell in these pages.  My thoughts since we are approaching the holidays filled with amazing food is this book is the perfect complement or gift for the food whore in all of us.  Jessica Tom when is the next book?  I can’t wait!
